  • Only use Coast Guard approved life jackets.
  • Ensure life jacket fits properly.
  • Ensure life jacket is in good condition with no tears, broken buckles or mildew spots.
  • Let kids pick their own life jacket - they are more apt to wear something they feel looks good and is comfortable.

Prevention Tips:

  • Keep a life jacket on yourself and your children when in a boat, in the water, or on the shoreline
  • Avoid alcohol while boating and swimming (If not, always designate a non-drinker to operate the boat, as well as, someone to watch any children in your group.)
  • Teach children to ask & receive permission prior to entering the water
  • Keep a watchful eye on all children as they play in or near the water (even if they wear a life jacket)
  • Obey boating rules when operating any vessel on the lake - this includes personal watercraft
  • Cartoon of person jumping into the water
  • Use caution when launching a boat
  • Do not dive into a lake -- whether from a boat, a bridge, or cliffs. Hitting submerged hazards and impacting the water from extreme heights potentially can be fatal.

These water safety "rules" are some of the simplest things we can do to make a trip to the lake safe and enjoyable for everybody.
