Fishing and Hunting
Opportunities for fishing and hunting in the area are abundant. Principal fish types include: channel and flathead catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, striped bass, carp, buffalo, walleye, and various sunfish. The hunting enthusiast will find several game species available, including turkeys, white-tailed deer, migratory waterfowl, squirrels, rabbits, quail, and mourning doves.
Boating
There are three boat access points located near W.D. Mayo Lock and Dam.
Please be aware of the navigation activities that take place near the structure and up and down river.
Take notice of barge traffic, and remember, it is much easier for you to avoid them than for them to avoid you!
Lockage is available to recreational vessels 24 hours a day. However, if commercial traffic is heavy, pleasure craft may be required to wait approximately 1.5 hours or may be permitted to lock through with the commercial vessels. Also be sure to check the Navigation Notices page for any potential closures or delays.
Sightseeing
Most sightseeing near Lock and Dam 14 will be done by boat. From the river, you can view various types of waterfowl, wildlife, and songbirds. There are multiple types of hardwood species lining the river that are beautiful during the fall.
Swimming
Swimming is not advised and is illegal near any lock and dam structure. At times, river flows can be a hazard as well.
Trails
There are no U.S. Army Corps of Engineers trails located near this area.
