Federal and State Agencies Meet on Jobs for Wounded Vets

Published July 9, 2012

TULSA – On Wednesday July 11, 2012, about 50 local federal agencies will be meeting to discuss ways to hire returning wounded veterans.  The regional and state Operation War Fighter organization, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tulsa District, Oklahoma Military Department, Society of American Military Engineers, Weston Solutions, and the Oklahoma Federal Executive Board will host the working lunch at the Two Rivers of the Four Winds state meeting facility at Keystone State Park beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The Operation Warfigher Program offers temporary duty locations at federal agencies to Soldiers who were wounded in combat, have returned stateside, and are to remain on active duty while being assessed for continued military service.

The program also offers skilled veterans an opportunity to work at federal facilities near their home for periods ranging from one to two years at no cost to the participating federal agency.

According to Col. Michael Teague, commander, Tulsa District Corps of Engineers, “Soldiers returning from military service have a wealth of knowledge and can perform a multitude of duties with little to no instruction or supervision. This program allows them to be at home while waiting their medical evaluation.” Teague also said that Soldiers are very adaptable and have a good work ethic. That makes them an excellent job candidate should they not be returned to active duty, he said.

Agencies that have job openings for which a Soldier is qualified are able to make a direct hire under a number of federal programs for veterans with honorable discharges.

Federal agencies that would like more information about this meeting or the program should contact the Tulsa District Public Affairs Office at 918-669-7366. Information on Veteran Hiring programs can be found by searching “veteran” at www.opm.gov
