Rumor Control: Tenkiller Dam is NOT failing!

Published April 26, 2011

Please help officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, put to rest the false rumor that Tenkiller Dam is about to fail.

Tenkiller Lake is functioning just as it was designed to do. It is holding a great deal of water in its flood pool, and it is releasing 13,700 cubic feet per second through its flood gates. That release does not exceed channel capacity. There is still storage space left in the flood pool. Engineers are monitoring the inflows. It is expected that the lake will reach 33 feet above normal which will fill 93 percent of its flood pool.

If the flood pool were to fill and additional water releases are needed which would exceed downstream channel capacity, emergency management officials would be notified. Any evacuation notices would always come through emergency management channels.
