TULSA, Okla. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District announced today that some Corps-operated campgrounds along the Oklahoma portion of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System are to reopen no later than Nov. 22, 2013.
Those parks along the Navigation System closed earlier this year due to funding limitations that would normally be open at this time, will return to the regular fall schedule. Those parks normally closed for the fall/winter period will remain closed in accordance with the regular 2013 park schedule.
The Corps is able to reopen these areas according to the fall schedule because of the limited maintenance normally required during the winter off-season.
The Corps continues to operate under a short-term continuing resolution. Without a federal budget, it is currently unclear if there will be available funding to keep the parks open for the spring/summer recreation season.
Additionally, because of the continuing budgetary constraints, visitors should be aware that there may be damage to some facilities or areas that will keep them closed, there may be high grass in areas, and some silted boat ramps.
These are the areas to reopen:
· McClellan-Kerr Navigation System:
Afton Landing
Tullahassee Loop primitive campground
· Webbers Falls:
Brewers Bend
Spaniard Creek
· R.S. Kerr Reservoir:
Applegate Cove – boat ramp open, primitive camping only
Short Mountain Cove – boat ramp open, primitive camping in winter loop
Cowlington Point – boat ramp open, camping in the winter loop
