Pine Creek public meeting planned to update progress of project

Published June 20, 2014

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander Col. Richard Pratt will host a public meeting July 8, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Valliant Community Center to present an update on Pine Creek Dam. The center is located at 311 Johnston Street, Valliant, Okla.

After completing a series of interim risk reduction measures Tulsa District completed the Dam Safety Modification Study completed the pre-construction engineering and design of the solution.

This meeting will present information about the progress of final remedial actions scheduled to restore the safety and future long-term beneficial use of the project. During the meeting Corps representatives will discuss the contract request for proposal (RFP) released June 19, 2014, and will touch on the trades needed in completion of the project. Corps representatives will also talk briefly about the schedule for contractors to arrive in the area so that area merchants and service providers can plan for their arrival.

Tulsa District recently completed design and released plans and specifications for contractors to begin preparation of proposals. There is an educational and informative site visit planned for Thursday, June 26, 2014 for those interested in proposing the contract. Contractors are welcome to attend and ask questions and receive feedback from designers. More information is available at www.fbo.gov

Proposals are due July 19, 2014 and October 2014 is the scheduled date for the contract award.

Concerns for safety of the dam that triggered the interim risk reduction measures began in 2009 when the Corps discovered embankment material from within the dam was migrating along and through a concrete conduit under the dam.

A series of tests for the sources of the material and the reason for the movement lead to discovery of a void and cracks and leaks in the conduit.  The void has been filled and leaks in the conduit joints have been sealed.  In addition, the conduit gates have been replaced.

Pine Creek Dam went into operation in 1969. The lake serves the citizens of Oklahoma providing benefits such as water supply, water quality, fish and wildlife, recreation, and flood risk management. The Corps of Engineers wants to ensure that the 44-year-old project will continue to provide those important services and more into the future. The public is encouraged to click on the Hot Topics button on Tulsa District’s website http://www.swt.usace.army.mil for information on Pine Creek dam safety activities.
