Kansas Area Corps Office: Be aware of high water

Published May 29, 2015

TULSA — The Kansas Area office of the Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, wants Kansans to know that recent rainfall has elevated water levels of many lakes and rivers.

The Corps asks visitors to keep a few important safety tips in mind:

-When the horn sounds below a dam, water levels are going to increase. Please move away from the channel and wait for the water to stabilize before returning to the bank.

-If you are further downstream of a reservoir, be aware that depths can change quickly without warning from rainfall and runoff.

-Please be careful around low water dams. These areas can trap debris and water depth may vary.

-In rivers and streams, there are currents you can’t see. Parents should keep a close eye on their children and talk to them about safety around water.

-If you see water across the road don’t drive through it, and don’t drive around barricades.

-Always wear a lifejacket if you are in, on or near the water.
