    SAME young members’ field trip provides exposure to real-life engineering

    It wasn’t the average field trip recently when a group of students visited a construction site and got to see first-hand the implementation of engineering principles they’re learning in school.

    Gaping hole number one was the beginning of a replacement span of the roadway bridge over Keystone Lake Dam. This is the first of three spans removed. This will be repeated 18 times to replace roadway built over the dam structure in 1964. Completion of the replacement spans is expected by November 2014.

    The Tulsa District Corps of Engineers report Kiewit Construction has removed eight of the 18 roadway spans over Keystone Dam. Modifications to the bridge piers are currently taking place.

    JROTC Cadets from Will Rogers College High School get a firsthand look at Keystone Dam’s infrastructure and powerhouse to see how electricity is generated that powers their electronic games. The high school students spent several hours being introduced by Tulsa District engineers to real life engineering put to work as part of the District’s STEM program.

    Tulsa District hosted a group of seven Junior Reserve Officer Training cadets from Will Rogers Collage High School for a tour of the Keystone Dam. The tour was part of the District’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program to promote engineering as career.
