Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to seek recreation development ideas

Published Feb. 27, 2012
TULSA - The Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a meeting to hear ideas for conceptual development from individuals and groups for the development and enhancement of recreation on Keystone and Oologah lakes. The meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., March 15 at the Tulsa District Office, 1645 S. 101st East Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This is in support of Section 3134 of the Water Resources Development Act of 2007, Oklahoma Lakes Demonstration Program, which provides for the implementation of an innovative 10 year program at lakes located primarily in Oklahoma. The purpose of the program is to demonstrate the benefits of enhanced recreation facilities and activities at those lakes.

The shorelines of Corps lakes are zoned for varying types and levels of recreation use and development. It is important to note that some sections of shoreline at Keystone and Oologah Lake may not be available for development due to existing agreements with resource management agencies, local and state governments, or other recreation use providers.

[Note: Maps depicting the shoreline zoning at Oologah Lake and Keystone Lake are attached, and the authorized uses for each type of zoning are on the following page.]

Conceptual ideas may be submitted for any water related recreational activity, but the following activities or facilities were identified as desirable in a survey recently conducted by the Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: equestrian, biking or hiking trails and related facilities; canoeing and kayaking activities and related facilities; swimming beaches; camping facilities; marinas; playgrounds.

Proposals will be evaluated by an interdisciplinary team consisting of both federal and state recreation providers. Competition for a lease may be required, as well as applicant funded market and feasibility studies depending on the level and type of development proposed.

Concept proposals under this initiative should be submitted by March 28, 2012 to John Tennery by email at John.Tennery@usace.army.mil or for additional information contact Mr. Tennery at 918-669-7406.
