TULSA – A blue-green algae warning has been issued for the Porum Landing area of Eufaula Lake. Swimming, water skiing, and water contact is prohibited in this area and the Porum Landing swim beach has been closed until further notice.

A blue-green algae warning has been issued for the Porum Landing area of Eufaula Lake. Swimming, water skiing, and water contact is in this area and the Porum Landing swim beach has been closed until further notice.

The blue-green algae warning for the Gentry Creek area of Eufaula Lake has changed to the advisory level, therefore contact with the water at Gentry Creek is discouraged.

A blue -green algae warning was previously issued for the Feyodi Park area of Keystone Lake. Swimming, water skiing, and water contact is prohibited in this area. In addition, the Cedar Creek Cove and Old Mannford/Old Hwy 51 areas of Keystone Lake and the Taylor Ferry swim beach at Fort Gibson Lake are closed due to blue-green algae.

Several cases of illness possibly related to blue-green algae exposure have been reported at the Tulsa District lakes with confirmed algae presence, some in areas where water sampling has not been performed. As a result, a blue-green algae advisory is in effect for all areas of Eufaula, Keystone, and Fort Gibson lakes that are not already under warning or closure. During an advisory, water contact is discouraged. A lake-wide advisory is also in effect for Tenkiller Lake due to the confirmed presence of blue-green algae.

"Public safety is our number one priority," said Col. Michael Teague, Tulsa District commander. "We are closing or prohibiting water contact in areas with high levels of blue-green algae and discouraging water contact in all other areas of the affected lakes. With that being said, we also know that some people will enter the water. If you do, please follow these precautions:

1. Do not drink untreated water.

2. Do not swim, water ski, wade, or boat in areas where the water is discolored or where you see foam, scum, or mats of algae on the water.

3. If you swim or wade in water that may have blue-green algae present – rinse off with fresh water (and soap if it is available). This is also an effective method of reducing skin exposure for your pets.

4. Do not let pets or livestock swim or drink where the water is discolored or where you see foam, scum, or mats of algae on the water.

5. Respect all water body and beach closures."

If a potential algae bloom is spotted, avoid that area and report it to the local project office. If you or your pet experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, eye irritation, respiratory symptoms or other unexplained illness, call your doctor or veterinarian. . If you suspect you may have illnesses related to exposure to blue-green algae you can report your exposure to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, Epidemiology Division at 1-405-271-4060.
