Tenkiller Dam Main Spillway Bridge Replacement

Q: How will the bridge work affect lake levels & flood operations?

A: The bridge work should not affect flood operations or lake levels. Tenkiller Lake’s authorized conservation pool is between elevation 594.5 and 632. We currently have no intention of deviating from the authorized conservation pool or keeping lake levels below 632.

Q: How long will the project take?

A: We estimate the project will take approximately two and a half years based upon the scope of work. This factors in normal expected weather impacts based upon historical regional climate.

Q: Why are you doing this repair?

The bridge is beyond its service design life and routine inspections from our Bridge Safety Program identified deficiencies that necessitated replacement.

Q: How will this closure affect traffic?

Motorists should anticipate increased travel times. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has approved a Detour Route for motorists.

Q: Why is this project being done before Fort Gibson Bridge, which is clearly in worse shape?

Fort Gibson is two and a half times larger, requires more funding and time to replace. We anticipate the Fort Gibson bridge replacement project to commence in the near future.

Q: How much will this cost?

The Tulsa District awarded a $28.7 million contract to demolish and replace the bridge.

ABOUT:  The Tenkiller Ferry Lake Bridge Replacement project is a critical infrastructure upgrade to replace the structurally deficient and fracture-critical bridge over the main spillway. Tenkiller Dam and the main spillway bridge were constructed in 1951. The project will enhance the safety for the travelling public and businesses who use this route daily, safeguard the integrity of the Tenkiller Ferry Dam, and ensures continued, reliable water management for the region. This proactive investment will protect lives, property, and economic activity for years to come. The project is currently in construction.

Enhanced Safety: The primary driver for this project is public safety. The new bridge is being built to modern standards to handle current and future traffic loads, replacing the 75-year-old structurally deficient bridge.

Economic and Community Impact: The new bridge will remove the current weight limit, facilitating commerce, improving emergency response times, and providing a reliable transportation route for local residents, businesses, and the tourism industry.

Efficient Progress: Construction is currently ahead of schedule, demonstrating excellent partnership between USACE and the awarded contractor showing commitment to delivering a safe, reliable bridge to the community sooner than anticipated while minimizing public disruption.

Detour plan for closure of State Highway 100 over Tenkiller Dam. Detour routes require use of Oklahoma 82, U.S. Interstate 40 or U.S. Route 64 to bypass closure.
