TULSA – Col. Michael Teague, Commander, Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will present an update on Pine Creek Dam on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Valliant Community Center, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The center is located at 311 Johnston Street, Valliant, Okla.

 After completing a series of interim risk reduction measures the Tulsa District began a Dam Safety Modification Study. 

This meeting will present the final remedial actions that are scheduled to fully restore the safety and future long term beneficial use of the project.

Concerns for safety of the dam that triggered the interim risk reduction measures began in 2009 when the Corps discovered embankment material from within the dam was migrating along and through a concrete conduit under the dam.

A series of tests for the sources of the material and the reason for the movement lead to discovery of a void and cracks and leaks in the conduit.  The void has been filled and leaks in the conduit joints have been sealed.  In addition, the conduit gates have been replaced.

Pine Creek Dam was placed into operation in 1969. The lake serves the citizens of Oklahoma providing benefits such as water supply, water quality, fish and wildlife, recreation, and flood risk management. The Corps of Engineers wants to ensure that the 44-year-old project will continue to safely provide those important services and more into the future.
